Not easy.
That's the point.
Gold is the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and one of the most respected youth achievements in the world. Open to Grade 11 students who have completed their Silver Award, Gold demands sustained commitment, genuine independence and the ability to lead yourself and others through challenge.
The highest level
of expectation
Gold includes the same four sections as Bronze and Silver, at the highest level of commitment and expectation. It also introduces a fifth component unique to Gold: the Residential Project.

Volunteering
At Gold, your volunteering should represent a genuine and sustained contribution to a cause or community you care about. The expectation is not simply that you turn up. It is that you take ownership, show initiative and make a difference that others would notice.

Physical
A minimum of 12 months of sustained physical activity, with clear evidence of progression and personal challenge. By Gold, you should be able to articulate not just what you did, but what it demanded of you and how you responded.

Skill
Gold level skill development should reflect genuine mastery or meaningful progression over a sustained period. Whether you are continuing from Silver or beginning something new, the depth of engagement expected is significant.

Adventurous Journey
The Gold expedition is four days and three nights. Crucially, at Gold level the journey is unaccompanied: your team navigates independently, without adults present in the field. Previous Gold cohorts have journeyed in destinations including Oman, Switzerland and Mount Kenya.

Residential Project
Unique to Gold, the Residential Project requires you to spend a minimum of five days living and working with people you have never met before, in a shared purposeful activity away from home. Past participants have found it one of the most unexpectedly rewarding parts of the entire programme.

Gold Award holders stand out. Universities and employers worldwide recognise what achieving Gold actually means: sustained commitment over months and years, the ability to lead and work independently and a willingness to push into genuinely challenging territory.
For UCAS personal statements and international university applications, Gold offers something most applicants simply cannot match: a structured, verified record of challenge, service and achievement across multiple domains, completed over at least a year.
Beyond the application, the qualities Gold develops, self management, resilience, adaptability and leadership, are precisely what life beyond school demands. The certificate matters. What earned it matters more.
What does the programme look like?
Gold participants continue to be supported through a dedicated weekly ECA programme at NLCS Dubai, alongside access to their Online Record Book (ORB). At this level, however, the expectation is that students are largely self managing. The ECA programme provides structure and support, but Gold is yours to drive.
How long does it take?
The Gold Award takes a minimum of 52 weeks to complete for students progressing from Silver or 76 weeks for direct entrants. Direct entry without a Silver Award is possible only in exceptional circumstances and is not the standard route through our programme.
Gold is
